But here’s the problem. Your fat cells may be under very strict instructions to hold onto that fat — unless they receive a specific signal telling them to release it. In other words, the default mode for your fat cells may be fat-storage mode.

And the hormone that may keep them locked there is cortisol — your body’s stress and survival hormone.

When cortisol is elevated, your fat cells may get one message, on repeat: hold on, don’t release, store everything.

Why? Because our bodies were designed to use cortisol to store fat and survive when food was scarce. Cortisol was the signal that said: times are tough, hoard the energy — because starvation was a real threat for our ancestors. Our bodies evolved to store as much fat as possible during the good times so we could survive the hard times. That’s why we’re here today.

It was essential thousands of years ago.

But in 2026? Completely unnecessary. We’re not worried about surviving winter without food. We can order Checkers Sixty60 in twenty minutes. We have full pantries, three meals a day, sometimes more. But our biology hasn’t caught up.

Your body may still be running ancient survival software. And modern life — work stress, kids, finances, poor sleep, constant WhatsApp pings — may keep your cortisol elevated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There’s a second force working against you — and it may make you a little angry.

But there’s a second force that may be working against you. And this one might actually make you a little angry. It did for me — because there’s something in our food supply that may be making it harder for women over 40 to lose weight.

I’m talking about ultra-processed foods.

And no, we’re not just talking about cooldrinks and chips and Cadbury slabs. “Ultra-processed” refers to any food product loaded with sugar, refined fats, salt, and artificial additives — manufactured in factories that strip the ingredients of their natural nutrients.

A major study released earlier this year in Boston showed that more than 70% of the food supply in grocery stores is considered ultra-processed. So how are you supposed to stop eating junk food, when three-quarters of what you can buy at Spar, Checkers, Pick n Pay or Woolworths — including everything labelled “healthy” — is essentially junk food in disguise?

And here’s what should make you really angry.

Back in the 1980s, the big food companies hired hundreds of scientists and gave them one task: make our products as addictive as possible. They discovered that when you combine the perfect ratio of sugar, saturated fat, and salt — what food scientists call the bliss point — most people simply can’t stop eating it.

And the results speak for themselves. In the 1960s, around 13% of South African adults were significantly overweight. As of 2026, that number is more than triple. That didn’t happen because women got lazy. It happened because the food changed.

Scientists confirmed this in a groundbreaking study. They found that people who eat ultra-processed foods have significantly lower levels of leptin — the hormone that tells you you’re full — and massively higher levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone that drives you to keep eating.

In other words, these foods may have been engineered to make you hungry, keep you eating, and make it nearly impossible to stop.

And what makes it even worse is — every time you give in to those engineered cravings, your blood sugar may spike. Your body may respond by flooding your system with cortisol. And that cortisol may lock your fat cells deeper into storage mode. A few hours later, the crash hits and the cravings come back even stronger.

It’s a vicious cycle. Cortisol may drive the cravings. The cravings may spike cortisol. Your body may never get a chance to come out of fat-storage mode. And I mean never.

That’s why willpower alone hasn’t worked for you. Because you’re not fighting hunger — you may be fighting your own stress hormones.

You weren’t weak. The grocery-store food was just designed to beat you.

That’s what may make stubborn weight so stubborn after 40. It’s two forces working against you at the same time — your body’s ancient survival programming, and a food supply engineered to exploit it. Together, they may create a cortisol-driven fat-storing trap that no diet or walking routine can overcome on its own.

 

IXThe One Signal That Overrides Cortisol

Your body already has a built-in fat-release signal. We just have to wake it up.

So that’s the bad news. The good news is, now that you understand what may be keeping you stuck, the solution becomes surprisingly simple.

Thanks to that Nobel-Prize-winning research I mentioned, there’s now a way that may help override both of these root causes at the same time.

Here’s how it may work.

First, it may help override your body’s default fat-storage programming — helping your fat cells shift out of storage mode and into release mode.

The amazing part is — just like fat-storage mode is a built-in survival mechanism, this breakthrough may work by triggering a different built-in survival mechanism. One you’ve definitely heard of before: the fight-or-flight response.

You know the feeling. When a taxi suddenly swerves in front of you on the N1. When your child screams in the next room. When you miss a step going down the stairs and your stomach drops. That instant jolt — heart pounding, senses sharp, every muscle ready to move — that’s fight-or-flight.

In that moment, adrenaline surges through your body and kicks you into high gear. But for that to work, your body needs a massive amount of energy released everywhere at once. Your muscles need it. Your brain needs it. Every organ needs it.

And where does that instant energy come from?

It comes from your fat reserves. All the stored energy sitting in your fat cells — including the stubborn fat around your belly and your hips.

When fight-or-flight kicks in, your body has no choice but to override fat-storage mode and start burning fat — fast.

What may make that happen on a cellular level is something called C-AMP. C-AMP is one of the body’s own signalling molecules, and researchers believe it may help counterbalance cortisol’s fat-storage signal.

When C-AMP is active, it’s thought to signal fat cells to ease off storage mode and release some of what they’re holding, rather than clinging to every calorie.

This isn’t fringe science. C-AMP is one of the most studied molecules in modern biology. The research on C-AMP signalling has been the focus of some of the most prestigious scientific breakthroughs of the past few decades.

C-AMP is the messenger that may have the authority to tell your fat cells what to do.

It’s hiding in a food you’ve eaten a hundred times — and never suspected.

The scientist who made this discovery — Dr. David Julius at UC San Francisco — wasn’t even studying fat loss. He was studying how the body feels pain. Specifically, he wanted to understand why chili peppers create that burning sensation when you eat them.

What he found was extraordinary.

In 2021, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to researchers, including Dr David Julius, for discovering the receptors the body uses to sense heat — work that relied on capsaicin, the compound that makes chili peppers hot. The prize recognised the discovery of that receptor, not any weight-loss product. They called these capsaicin receptors.1

And here’s what may matter for fat loss after 40.

When those capsaicin receptors are activated, some research suggests the body’s C-AMP signalling may be supported alongside the familiar warming sensation.2

And as you now know — once C-AMP is activated, it may help override the cortisol signal that’s been keeping your fat cells locked in storage mode. The fat-holding command may quiet, and the fat-releasing command may take over. So every fat cell in your body may get the signal to start releasing — the belly, the face, the bra-fat, the FUPA, the upper arms, the hips.
